Metropolis Health Services, India’s only multinational chain of diagnostic centers will be joining hands with pharma major Novartis to organize a yearlong Hepatitis Awareness Program. The awareness campaign will focus on a variety of programs from Hepatitis screenings for general public pan India across Metropolis centers, Complete Medical Education (CME’s) for doctors & public awareness launched from 19th May 2009 to commemorate World Hepatitis Day.

Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver, which in turn causes damage to individual liver cells. It is most often caused by viral infection. Hepatitis B is a contagious liver disease caused by the Hepatitis B virus (HBV), present in the body and bodily fluids of infected individual. This deadly virus infects liver cells, resulting in cirrhosis (liver scarring), liver cancer, failure and untimely death. It is usually spread through an HBV infected individual’s blood, semen, or any other body fluids. This can happen through direct contact with the blood or open sores of an infected person, having sexual contact with an infected person, an infected mother passing it to her baby at birth or sharing needles, syringes, or other drug injection equipment.

According to World Health Organization (WHO), even though India is considered to have moderate percentage level of HBV infections in the population, there are estimations that approximately 40 million Indian are Hepatitis B virus (HBV) carriers. Over 100,000 Indian succumb each year from complications caused by HBV infections (i.e. cirrhosis, liver cancer etc). In an effort to keep this rising toll in check nationwide plans have already been implemented in 2003, to arrange for availability of vaccination to all infants in the poor sections of 33 districts. Also another 1.49 million non-slum infants were added to the program in 2005.

World Hepatitis day, an initiative by World Hepatitis Alliance, a nongovernmental organization represents almost 200 hepatitis B and hepatitis C patient groups from around the world and is governed by a representative board of patient groups from seven world regions.

Ameera Shah, Executive Director, Metropolis Health Services stating the need for this nationwide awareness program, says “It is crucial for the country to realize the magnitude of this disease. There is no obvious cure for it and the only option is awareness and prevention. Our singular aim is to generate know how of Hepatitis B so that people (both Doctors and General Public) are wiser and more responsible. Metropolis Health Services has always been in the fore front of disease prevention and focuses on a healthier and wiser India”

Dr. Suresh Menon, Chief Scientific Officer, Novartis states that, “In spite of Hepatitis B being around 10 times more prevalent and 50 to 100 times more infectious than HIV, hardly anything is known about it to general population. This adds to our social responsibility to spread the necessary awareness about Hepatitis B, so as to keep people informed about and also protected from; this deadly disease.”

INCREASING THREAT OF TUBERCULOSIS IN INDIA

leave a comment »

Every year 24th March is celebrated as World TB day. Even today Tuberculosis is a leading cause of death in India. Know more about this deadly disease from this article authored by
Dr. Shamma Shetye, HOD, Microbiology, Metropolis Health Services(I) Ltd.

India has more new TB cases annually than any other country, ranking first among the 22 high-burden TB countries worldwide according to the WHO Global TB Report 2006. TB remains one of the leading infectious causes of mortality in India, resulting in 364,000 deaths annually. There were more than 1.8 million new TB cases in India in 2004, representing over one-fifth of all TB cases worldwide. The estimated incidence rate in 2004 was 168 per 100,000 people.

The proportion of tuberculosis cases co-infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was also found to be rising. The association with HIV and increasing multi drug resistant tuberculosis (MDRTB) appears to be a serious issue, especially for the developing nations. Around 10% of people infected with TB actually develop the disease in their lifetimes, but this proportion is changing as HIV severely weakens the human immune system and makes people much more vulnerable. TB causes more deaths among women than all causes of maternal mortality combined, and more than 900 million women are infected with TB worldwide. Once infected with TB, women of reproductive age are more susceptible to developing TB disease than men of the same age. Women in this age group are also at greater risk of becoming infected with HIV.

You are at risk, if you have:

  • Lower Immunity
  • Close contact with someone with infectious TB
  • Age, older adults
  • Substance Abuse
  • Malnutrition
  • Lack of Medical Care

Some of the signs & symptoms to keep a watch for:

  • Unintended weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Slight fever
  • Night Sweats
  • Chills
  • Loss of appetite
  • Pain with breathing or coughing

SOME MYTHS AND TRUTH ABOUT TB

  • Myth – TB is a life-threatening disease
  • Truth – TB can be cured by taking a course of medicine
  • Myth – You can become infected by TB by touching someone who has it or being with someone who has it for a few minutes
  • Truth – TB is transmitted only by prolonged close contact with coughing infectious patients
  • Myth – If someone has TB they are infectious
  • Truth – TB patients who have taken their treatment for 2 weeks and are still taking treatment are usually not infectious
  • Myth – Only the poor and malnourished get TB
  • Truth – Anyone can get TB rich or poor and become unwilling host to bacteria
  • Myth – Once you have TB you are doomed and cannot get treated
  • Truth – TB treatment is freely available, and correct treatment cures the vast majority of cases

Rapid Diagnosis of TB is important for the treatment of the individual patient and to implement appropriate public health precautions. Timely diagnosis at reputed and accredited laboratories can help in determining the infectiousness and assess drug susceptibility. Since the treatment is prolonged the tests have to be done periodically to analyze the situation and path of treatment. Once TB is diagnosed, tests are conducted every two to three months till the patient is declared completely cured. The RNTCP (Revised National TB Control Programme) has also laid guidelines to ensure consistency in treatment.

Key tests on TB offered by Metropolis Health Services

Metropolis provides the widest test menu for TB, costs ranging between Rs. 100 to Rs.4000. Metropolis maintains high standards of quality and is a NABL, CLIA & CAP Accredited Laboratory. The quality of equipments and standardized reagents ensure the high accuracy of the results.

  1. Microscopy– A basic screening test with a turnaround time of a day, rapid and the first step to diagnosis of TB.
  2. Culture A definitive diagnosis of TB that requires identification of the mycobacterium tuberculosis form a specimen. The microbe is made to grow in artificial medium to analyze the strain. The turnaround time is between 3-6 weeks.
  3. Automated liquid culture/ Rapid culture- This is also a form of culture wherein the turnaround time is brought down to as low as 10 – 15 days. The microbes are made to grow in liquid medium which is fully automated.
  4. Drug susceptibility- This is a drug sensitivity test, primarily to determine that whether the drugs are reacting in the proper direction or not. This is usually recommended after the treatment has begun, ideally 2-3 months from detection.
  5. Molecular methods- Turnaround time is as low as a day, it largely deals with rapid detection of the infection, directly from specimens. This is highly sensitive nad specific for the diagnosis of M. TB complex.
  6. Quanteferon TB Gold test- A higly advanced and gold standard test. It is a whole blood test used as an aid for diagnosing different strains of TB including latent tuberculosis infection ( LTBI). This has been approved by FDA in 2005.
  7. DNA probe- To figure out the strain of the mycobacterium tuberculosis, it is a step forward in identifying the culture.

HLFPPT has committed to develop the Merrygold Health Network with support of Govt. of UP and SIFPSA (State Innovations in Family Planning Services Project Agency) in the entire State. The Merrygold Health Network is an example of public private partnership working on the principles of franchising for development of network across all 70 districts of Uttar Pradesh. The project will support the Government of UP’s and GOI ‘s efforts in reducing maternal, new born and infant deaths by increasing antenatal care, institutional deliveries and new born care, post natal and family planning services to women in rural and semi urban population.

In the first phase of the project, Metropolis will open one Lab in HLFPPT-owned Hospital and the other lab will be commissioned in a Franchised Hospital. The first Metropolis Laboratory has been commissioned in HLFPPT-owned Merrygold Hospital, Agra. Samples of patients requiring specialized testing will be sent to the referral laboratories of Metropolis Health Services Laboratory through their own effective and efficient systems. The patients will see the reports on the website or can collect the reports from Merrygold hospital.

Speaking on this new partnership, Dr. Velu, Managing Director, Metropolis Health Services said, “It is our privilege to partner with HLFPPT; we are looking forward to provide the best of services and technologies to the underserved. The main objective of this partnership is to create a sustainable public private partnership in health care for the lower middle class and the underserved population. Merrygold health network will create grass-root level networking to provide quality reproductive and child health services at subsidized cost per fixed prices. We will follow the same quality standards to ensure consistency in care. Through this set up we wish to establish our network across the state and offer a comprehensive range of quality tests and latest technology to everyone.”

Elaborating on the project, Dr Vasanthi Krishnan, CEO, Hindustan Latex Family Planning Promotion Trust, said, “The network of franchised hospitals and health clinics will be developed under the name of ‘Merrygold Network’ and each level has been branded with specific name and will provide different level of quality health care . At district level these hospitals/ health clinics will be named as Merrygold and will provide maternal child health services including emergency obstetrics facility. Block /sub divisional hospitals /clinics named Merry silver will provide essential obstetric care, family planning services, and immunization services. These hospitals/clinics are linked with district Merrygold network to refer complicated cases from these centers. Village level network named as Merry Tarang will provide health counseling, condoms, oral contraceptives, sanitary napkins, oral rehydration salts and Folic Acid Tablets to community.”

At present, HLFPPT has established their network in 18 district level Merrygold hospitals and 64 Merrysilver hospitals/health clinics in 11 districts i.e. Agra, Kanpur, Badaun, Lucknow, Barabanki, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Allahabad, Mathura Bareilly & Azamgargh. Similarly 1350 members like ASHA, AWW, chemist, community leaders have been associated with Merry Tarang health network. Metropolis Health Services organizes Cancer Awareness camp for Prostate Cancer

leave a comment »

WHO estimates that 84 million people will die of cancer between 2005 and 2015 without intervention. Each year on 4 February, World Cancer Day is celebrated. Preventing cancer and raising quality of life for cancer patients are its main focus.

Worldwide prostate cancer statistics indicate that over 700,000 men annually are diagnosed with prostate cancer. Annual prostate evaluation enables you to take preventive action – if detected and treated early, prostate cancer has a cure rate of over 90%.

On the occasion of World Cancer Day, Metropolis Health Services – India’s only multinational chain of diagnostic centre – will conduct Prostate cancer awareness camp across all its centres in India. The camp would be held from February 4th to February 19th.

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most common types of cancer in men and it usually affects men over the age of 50. According to a recent study, prostate cancer ranks fifth in incidence and fourth in cancer mortality for men in Mumbai and the incidence is increasing by 1% every year. Over the past three months the number of men who came for Total PSA test at Metropolis were 4774, out of which 46% men aged  50 years and above were found to have high PSA levels. It’s a worldwide practice that if total PSA levels are between 4-20 ng/ml, a Free PSA test (which measures the percentage of PSA that is not bound to proteins in the blood and is more specific) is recommended. At Metropolis, this Free PSA test is offered at no extra cost.

On the occasion Dr. Sushil Shah, Chairman, Metropolis Health Services (I) Ltd., said “Though there is awareness among the masses regarding cancer caused through smoking and for cervical cancer but the awareness of prostate cancer is very low, therefore this year Metropolis has dedicated World Cancer Day to create awareness of this deadly disease.”

Metropolis will offer a range of special health packages covering tests for:

  • Total Prostate Specific Antigen
  • Cholesterol
  • Triglyceride
  • Fasting Blood Sugar

Packages will be priced at Rs. 600 as against the regular price of Rs. 860. For more details about the special package or to seek an appointment at your nearest Metropolis laboratory you can send a SMS to

MUMBAI TRAFFIC POLICE & METROPOLIS HEALTH SERVICES JOIN HANDS IN A CRUSADE AGAINST DRUNKEN DRIVING

leave a comment »

Life on the fast lane in Indian metros, changing lifestyles even in tier two cities and mushrooming pubs have contributed to the spurt in rash driving on Indian roads and consequent accidents. Liquor is more freely available than before and nearly 75 percent of the Indian population, now below the age of 35, have more disposable incomes to splurge on liquor, studies cite. This is definitely a major risk for public safety, and it is vitally essential for civic bodies such as the police and socially responsible corporates to contribute towards the control of drunken driving. This initiative is worth praising. Let’s hope that there would be a decline in the number of accident cases due to drunken driving.

Mumbai Traffic Police has joined hands with Metropolis Health Services – India’s only multinational chain of diagnostics centers – on their ‘Don’t Drink & Drive Campaign‘. As a part of this initiative, Metropolis will reach out to masses to spread messages on public safety by printing the message on its stationery which reaches out to an average of 1 lakh customers and their families per month.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sanjay Barve, Joint Police Commissioner Traffic –Mumbai Police, said, “The Don’t Drink and Drive campaign began in June 2007, and in the first year itself there were more than 10,000 cases of drunken driving registered. The following year the number of cases increased to more than 16,000. With this there was steep fall in the number of casualties due to drunken driving. In this endeavour we are happy to have found a partner like Metropolis Health Services, who voluntarily came to us to participate in our mission. Everyday Metropolis issues 10,000 reports, making it one of the preferred means to communicate the message of Don’t Drink and Drive by printing it on them.”

Talking about this new initiative of Metropolis, Dr. Sushil Shah, Chairman, Metropolis Health Services (I) Ltd, said, “As a part of our Corporate Social Responsibility Programs Metropolis is happy to be a part of this awareness campaign in any way possible. We have conducted several health awareness campaigns for the police in Kerala, Tamil Nadu. Apart from this, in Mumbai we have a tie up with most of the Government Hospitals to provide high end pathology solutions at discounted rate. Recently we have entered into a tie up with the Police Hospital, Nagpada in Mumbai for provision of pathology services at discounted rates. This service would be available to policemen from 85 police stations in Mumbai. As of now we have this partnership only for the city of Mumbai but gradually we plan it to take it to other cities vis-à-vis Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai and Kerala in the first phase and over a period of time to every state where Metropolis present.
